Invitation for Submission of Comments on the Draft Updated Primary Prevention Guideline and the Draft Updated Case Detection and Diagnosis Guideline
The ‘National Evidence Based Guidelines for the Management of Type 2 Diabetes’ were initiated in 1999 under funding from the Department of Health and Ageing.
Diabetes Australia, together with The Diabetes Unit at the Australian Health Policy Institute, University of Sydney, has drafted updated guidelines for the prevention, detection and diagnosis of type 2 diabetes:
- updated Primary Prevention guideline, and
- updated Case Detection and Diagnosis guideline.
These guidelines have been proposed for submission to the NHMRC for approval under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992.
The Primary Prevention Guideline covers issues relating to the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes. It aims to inform and guide health promotion and preventative activities for type 2 diabetes with evidence based information on what works and what does not. The guideline targets health promotion and public health practitioners, planners and policy makers, and clinicians. The Case Detection and Diagnosis Guideline addresses the topic of case detection and diagnosis of undiagnosed type 2 diabetes in asymptomatic non-pregnant adults. It targets all categories of clinicians but will have particular relevance to GPs.

Diabetes Australia has drafted a guideline for the diagnosis, prevention, and management of chronic kidney disease in type 2 diabetes.
This guideline has been proposed for submission to the NHMRC for approval under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992.
The Kidney Disease Guideline covers issues relating to the prevention of chronic kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes. Its aim is to inform and guide the diagnosis, prevention and management of chronic kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes with evidence based information on what interventions prevent the development and/or progression of chronic kidney disease. It targets all categories of clinicians but will have particular relevance to general practitioners.
