People often ask a number of questions about type 1 diabetes. Below are some of the more commonly asked questions.

No. Diabetes is not a contagious disease. This means that you cannot catch diabetes from another person and, if you have diabetes, no-one can catch it from you.

No. Type 1 diabetes is not a lifestyle disease. It is an auto-immune disease and as yet cannot be prevented.

No. At this stage there is no cure for type 1 diabetes, however the disease can be managed effectively. Researchers throughout the world are working on a cure.

Type 1 diabetes is managed with insulin replacement through lifelong insulin injections (up to 6 every day), by following a healthy diet and eating plan, taking regular exercise and monitoring of blood glucose levels regularly (up to 6 times every day or as directed by a doctor or Credentialled Diabetes Educator).
