Diabetes Australia acknowledges the effective treatment of obesity through adjustable gastric banding surgery and supports an individual’s decision to undergo the surgery. There are clear benefits for Lap-Band surgery for the severely obese which has strong links to type 2 diabetes. This form of treatment for obesity should be used as a last resort for those who have not adequately responded to intensive lifestyle measures to control their weight.
Research has shown that gastric banding is an effective measure for long term reductions in weight and improved health outcomes, but only for obese adults with significant co-morbidities, for whom other measures have not been successful.
Diabetes Australia believes that surgery may not be appropriate for all obese people or those who are overweight. People with diabetes need to speak to their GP to discuss the complications that all operations can incur and also take into account the side effects before making the decision to pursue this treatment option.
