Diabetes breakthrough recognised in Eureka Prizes nominations

Diabetes Australia
05.08.2008
Presented annually by the Australian Museum, the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes reward excellence in the fields of research & innovation, science leadership, school science and science journalism & communication.

Dr Carola Vinuesa, an immunologist from ANU, has been nominated as a finalist for her discovery of Roquin, a gene that causes type 1 diabetes and lupus. This is an enormous breakthrough in diabetes research and will very likely lead to better treatments for these autoimmune diseases.

The Life Scientist of the Year Award depends on public voting around Australia and the 6 finalists will also be featured on ABC's Catalyst in a couple of weeks time.

YOU CAN HAVE YOUR SAY: Vote for Dr Carola Vinuesa.

Voting closes on 17 August 2008.

Winners will be announced at the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Award Dinner on Tuesday 19 August and posted on their website soon after.
