A blockage of an artery in or leading to the brain can lead to a
stroke or cerebrovascular accident.
Symptoms
- Loss of speech
- paralysis down one side of the body
- loss of vision
- coma or confusion.
Rehabilitation, including physiotherapy and speech therapy, often
assists the person who has had a stroke to return to an active life.
A partial blockage of a blood vessel in or leading to the brain can
cause symptoms such as temporary loss of speech, temporary paralysis,
temporary impairment of vision, confusion or convulsions (transient
ischaemic attack).
This situation needs urgent medical attention because anti-clotting
treatment or surgery to clean out the arteries in the neck can prevent a
subsequent stroke.
