Barry O'Farrell Independent President & Board Chair
Barry O'Farrell was appointed Independent President and Chair of the Board of Diabetes Australia in 2019. Barry was the 43rd Premier of New South Wales and Minister for Western Sydney from 2011 to 2014, and a member of the New South Wales Parliament from 1999 – 2014. He worked with successive Federal Governments to improve services and infrastructure in the state including signing agreements on the National Disability Insurance Scheme, school education (Gonski Reforms), and health funding. He is currently CEO of Racing Australia, Chair of the NSW Rugby League Foundation, and a Trustee of the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust.
Dr Moira Watson

Dr Watson was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2009. She is a former Diabetes Australia President and current President of Diabetes WA where she has served since 2009. Moira is Managing Director of Chutzpa, a management consulting company. In addition to her work with Diabetes Australia, Moira is Chair of the Volunteer Task Force, a Councillor with HBF and a member of the National Health and Medical Research Council Consumer and Community Advisor Group.
Mr John Townend AM
AM, CFRE, Emeritus FFIA, LFS(Hons Grad)
John was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2010. He is Chair of Diabetes Australia Research Ltd where he has served as a Director since 1989 and is a Governor of the Kellion Diabetes Foundation. John has previously served as Vice-Chairman of the International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region, President of Diabetes Australia and President of Diabetes NSW. He was also Chair of the Fundraising Institute of NSW and the Fundraising Institute of Australia.
Associate Professor Paul Williams
BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, ARCPA, FFSc (RCPA)
Professor Williams was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2008. He previously served on the Board from 1998 – 2002. He is Associate Professor and Principal Research Fellow at the University of Sydney Medical School and Deputy Director of the Chemical Pathology Laboratories at the Royal Prince Albert Hospital. Paul is also a Director of Diabetes Australia Research Ltd and a past President of the Australian Diabetes Society. He is Chair of the Diabetes Australia International Affairs Committee and served on the Executive Committee of the International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region.
Mr Craig Beyers
BEng (Environmental Engineering), GradCert Bus (Philanthropy and Nonprofit), MAAS
Craig was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2015. He has served as President of Diabetes Queensland since 2015, following his initial appointment to the Board in 2011. Craig is Manager of Air Quality, Acoustics and Vibrations at Assured Monitoring Group Pty Ltd. He has extensive experience working on local, national, regional and international level projects. He has lived with type 1 diabetes for more than 30 years. He is a member of the Diabetes Australia Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee.
Mr Chris Jose
Chris was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2011. He has been President of Diabetes Victoria since 2007. Chris also Chairs the National Diabetes Services Scheme Governance Committee. He is a partner in one of Australia’s leading law firms, Herbert Smith Freehills, where he practises in the areas of competition law and market regulation. Chris has previously worked as a barrister at the Victorian Bar, and has worked for various Government agencies.
Mr Robert Manning
Robert was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014. He is the President of Diabetes Tasmania where he has served as a Director from 2010. Robert is a Senior Associate of the firm Murdoch Clarke Lawyers. He is also actively involved in the activities of the Law Society, being a member of its Property and Commercial Law Committee and the current Chair of its Pro Bono Legal Assistance Committee.
Mr Leo Tutt
BEc, LLB, FCA, CTA, FCPA, MAICD
Leo was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014. Since November 2010 he has served as Chair of the Board of Directors of Diabetes NSW and ACT, having served as a Director since 2001 and Vice President since 2004. Leo leads the Audit and Assurance division and is a member of the Executive Board of William Buck, a leading Chartered Accounting and Business Advisory practice. He is a Director of Glycemic Index Limited (GI Foundation).
Mr Brett Fenton
BN, RN, Grad Cert DiabEd
Brett was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2018. He is President of Australian Diabetes Educators Association and Manager of Diabetes Services at Central Coast Local Health District in New South Wales. Brett is a Credentialled Diabetes Educator and has had type 1 diabetes for 28 years. Brett is a member of the New South Wales Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) - Diabetes Taskforce, he has been an associate investigator on a number of studies regarding management of type 1 diabetes, he is co-author of “Flex IT” – Flexible insulin therapy and coordinated a national diabetes prevention program “Reset Your Life”.
Associate Professor Glynis Ross
Associate Professor Ross was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2016. She is President of the Australian Diabetes Society, a Senior Medical Advisor to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, and was previously President of the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society. Glynis is Lead Endocrinologist for Diabetes and Pregnancy services at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and a Senior Endocrinologist at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. She is a member of the NSW Diabetes Taskforce and NSW ACI Endocrine Network Executive.
Associate Professor Stephen Stranks
Associate Professor Stranks appointed to the Board of Directors in 2018. He is the Vice President of the Australian Diabetes Society, a Director of Southern Adelaide Diabetes and Endocrine Services and Associate Professor at Flinders University. His Clinical role involves delivery of services Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Bone Disease at Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and public outreach services in community settings in the region. His major personal interests are in postgraduate training and clinical trials in diabetes management in outpatient and inpatient settings. He leads a clinical research team and has been the Australian lead investigator on major international trials in the field of type 2 diabetes management.
