Understanding insulin resistance
Insulin resistance is the process where the body no longer responds to insulin in the way it should. It often precedes a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
Dr Clinton Bruce from Deakin University says our understanding of the mechanisms that cause insulin resistance must be improved.
“Currently, our understanding of the mechanisms causing insulin resistance has largely been derived from studies using methods that don’t mimic real-life conditions,” Dr Bruce said.
“With the help of a grant from Diabetes Australia we will conduct studies that closely reflect real life in order to develop a deeper physiological understanding of the causes of insulin resistance.
“If we can get a better picture of what causes it, that will help researchers to better target more effective strategies to combat it and help prevent people from developing type 2 diabetes.”
