– IMPORTANT COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE – 9 April 2021 The Australian Government has issued updated advice regarding the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for people 50 years and under. A very small number of people have experienced adverse reactions to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine resulting in a very specific syndrome involving blood clots with low platelet counts. This is an extremely rare and unlikely adverse reaction. However, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is the “preferred vaccine” for adults aged under 50 years. This is a precautionary measure. The AstraZeneca vaccine continues to be approved for use. Diabetes Australia recommends everyone living with diabetes speak to their doctor, or CDE or other health professional for advice regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and what is suitable for you personally. If you have already had the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, and experienced no adverse reactions, you should have your second dose. This is in line with Australian Government advice. Diabetes Australia will continue to keep the diabetes community updated as we receive further advice from the Department of Health.
