Diabetes Australia appoints new leader for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and diabetes 4 April 2019 Diabetes Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Lee to a new role to strengthen the focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and diabetes. Diabetes Australia CEO Professor Greg Johnson said he was excited that Chris had taken on the challenge to help improve outcomes for First Nations people with diabetes. “Chris is from the Larrakia peoples of Darwin in the Northern Territory and brings more than 25 years’ experience in effective engagement and consultation with First Nations communities,” Professor Johnson said. “Chris will lead efforts to strengthen our partnerships with First Nations communities and co-design new strategies and programs.” Mr Lee said he was looking forward to working with communities to deliver real change for First Nations people. “Every First Nations community in Australia is seriously impacted by type 2 diabetes,” Mr Lee said. “First Nations people with diabetes are dying younger and experiencing higher rates of serious complications including eye damage and blindness, amputations, kidney damage and dialysis, and cardiovascular complications. “If we are going to close the gap in health outcomes we need to work collaboratively with communities on programs that deliver real results. “I know it is a big job but I’m up for the challenge.”
