Your impact Your support has enabled researchers and innovators to turn their bold ideas into breakthroughs across multiple streams of diabetes research. Over the past 50 years, we have invested $50M+ into Australian research that is changing the landscape of diabetes management, treatment, and prevention globally. By embedding the voices of people living with diabetes at the heart of our process, we ensure that scientific breakthroughs translate into meaningful, life-changing benefits. Together, our impact and momentum are greater” How your support is driving breakthroughs in Australian diabetes research Leading the charge on early screening for type 1 diabetes Professor John Wentworth’s work to develop an easy, affordable finger prick test to detect type 1 diabetes has already seen global demand and not only opens the door to prevention, but helps reduce the risk of life-threatening ketoacidosis at diagnosis. Exploring type 2 diabetes therapies through the gut Associate Professor Tongzhi Wu has progressed understanding of metformin treatment and new bile acid therapies, opening new pathways for therapies that could make diabetes easier to manage and improve quality of life. Ending diabetes stigma Dr Elizabeth Holmes-Truscott’s work, in partnership with people living with diabetes, to understand and address diabetes stigma, is contributing to greater psychosocial wellbeing and quality of care for people living with diabetes. Rethinking diet for type 2 diabetes Professor Grant Brinkworth’s rethinking of diet guidelines for type 2 diabetes is a positive step forward in helping people take control of their health with more effective dietary strategies. Rewiring the brain to change the course of type 2 diabetes Professor Garron Dodd discovered brain neurons that control the regulation of blood glucose, and which are compromised in the brain of a person with type 2 diabetes. Funding has enabled Professor Dodd to test treatments that could have profound implications for remission of type 2 diabetes. Exploring the link between gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes Simone Marschner has made progress towards more personalised care for women after a GDM pregnancy, helping to develop better strategies to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. My hope is that diabetes will not stop anyone from living their dream. It certainly hasn’t stopped me.”~ Dr Steven James – Diabetes Researcher, Lives with type 1 diabetes Donate to diabetes research Share your story through our Spark Change platform and have your say on what affordable access to AID would mean to you and your quality of life.
