Professor Merlin Thomas – 2019 Type 2 Diabetes Millennium Research Award 4 December 2018 Professor Merlin Thomas, at Monash University, has been awarded the prestigious 2019 Type 2 Diabetes Millennium Research Award to support research into a new inhibitor which could help prevent and treat diabetes-related complications including heart attack, stroke or limb amputation. Professor Thomas and his team have identified a key process through which these complications can occur, and developed a ‘smart’ inhibitor to selectively target this dangerous pathway. This research will lead to a much-needed new treatment for the development and progression of complications in type 2 diabetes. The Millennium Awards provides $150,000 over two years to support his research. * Picture: Rowan Ramsey MP, Member for Grey, Dr Raelene Pickering and Graham Perrett MP, Member for Moreton.
