Insulin Pump Program (IPP) As of August 2026, Diabetes Australia administers the Insulin Pump Program on behalf of the Australian Government. If you’ve already applied for the Insulin Pump Program, or are currently on the waitlist you do not need to do anything. Diabetes Australia is working closely with Breakthrough T1D to ensure a smooth transition of the program, including existing records, applications, and the current waitlist. Application, recipient and waitlist information is being securely transferred to Diabetes Australia so we can continue administering the program and supporting participants. About the Insulin Pump Program The Australian Government established the Insulin Pump Program in 2008 The Insulin Pump Program provides fully subsidised insulin pumps to eligible children and young adults under 21 years of age with type 1 diabetes. The program helps improve access to diabetes technology for people who meet the financial and clinical eligibility requirements. Eligibility for the Insulin Pump Program To apply for an insulin pump through the program, the following eligibility criteria must be met: The person who will receive the pump is under 21 years of age The combined annual income is $123,078 or less The person who will receive the pump does not have access to an insulin pump through private health insurance The person who will receive the pump is eligible for Medicare The person who will receive the pump is an Australian or New Zealand citizen residing in Australia. Permanent residents, or people who have applied to become permanent residents, may also be eligible. Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee you will receive an insulin pump through the program. Before applying, we encourage you to discuss whether insulin pump therapy is right for you with your healthcare team. How to apply Applying for the Insulin Pump Program is simple: Talk to your healthcare team about whether insulin pump therapy is right for you and whether they’ll support your application for the Insulin Pump Program. Submit an application during an open application round. If we need any additional information or supporting documents, we will contact you directly. Once we have assessed your eligibility and received confirmation from your healthcare team, we’ll let you know the outcome of your application. If your application is successful, we will arrange for your insulin pump to be ordered and supplied. Income eligibility To be eligible for the Insulin Pump Program, the applicant’s combined annual household income must be $123,078 or less.* Applicants whose family income exceeds this amount are generally not eligible unless they are caring for more than one child. Clinical eligibility As part of the application process, your healthcare team will need to confirm that insulin pump therapy is appropriate for you and that you meet the program’s clinical eligibility requirements. This includes confirming the recipient: lives with type 1 diabetes is likely to benefit from insulin pump therapy has demonstrated willingness to check blood glucose levels four or more times per day has demonstrated competence at injecting insulin using pens/syringes has ongoing support form an appropriate diabetes healthcare team. Applications submitted before 17 August 2026 If you submitted an application to Breakthrough T1D before 17 August 2026, you do not need to submit a new application. Existing applications and waitlist information are being securely transferred to Diabetes Australia and will continue to be assessed and managed through the program. You’ll need to discuss whether insulin pump therapy is right for you or your child with your healthcare team. They can explain the benefits and considerations and help determine whether insulin pump therapy is suitable for our circumstances. Who is eligible for a fully subsidised insulin pump? To be eligible for an insulin pump through the Insulin Pump Program, the person receiving the pump must: Be under 21 years of age Meet the program’s income eligibility requirements Be eligible for Medicare Be an Australia or New Zealand citizen living in Australia, or meet the program’s residency requirements Not have access to an insulin pump through private health insurance or another source of funding. Your healthcare team will also need to confirm that you meet the clinical eligibility requirements for the program. I have private health insurance. Can I apply for the program? If you have access to an insulin pump through private health insurance or another reimbursement pathway, you will not be eligible for an insulin pump through this program. If you are unsure what your health insurance covers, contact your insurer for advice about insulin pump benefits available under your policy. Which insulin pump is available through the program? The insulin pump currently available through the Insulin Pump Program is the mylife YpsoPump with CamAPS FX. Are the pumps available through the program waterproof? The mylife YpsoPump can be immersed to a depth of one metre for up to 60 minutes. For the most up-to-date information, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. Are the insulin pumps available through the program compatible with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)? Yes. People receiving a pump through the program can access CGM available through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) and choose a compatible device that works with their pump. To help determine which CGM devices are compatible with the mylife YpsoPump, please refer to the NDSS CGM Device Summary Chart. Do I need to do anything extra to access insulin pump consumables? Yes, the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) provides subsidised insulin pump consumables for eligible people. Your healthcare team can complete the necessary NDSS forms. Once registered with the NDSS, you will be able to access subsidised insulin pump consumables and other diabetes products. Diabetes Australia will contact you by phone and email once your application has been assessed. If you application is approved, you will receive information about the next steps for receiving your insulin pump. What happens if program funding is exhausted while my application is being processed? If your application is eligible but the funding has been exhausted, your application will be placed on a waitlist. and Diabetes Australia will keep you informed about its status. Will I receive the subsidy payment directly? No. If your application is approved, Diabetes Australia will arrange and pay for your insulin pump through the program. Payments are not made directly to applicants or recipients. I have more than one child with type 1 diabetes. What does this mean for me? Special eligibility provisions may apply for families caring for more than one child living with type 1 diabetes. No. If you submitted an application before 17 August 2026, you do not need to submit a new application. Your application has been securely transferred to Diabetes Australia and will continue to be assessed and managed through the program. No. If you were previously placed on the Insulin Pump Program waitlist, your information has been transferred to Diabetes Australia as part of the program transition. We will contact you if any further information is required and will keep you informed about the status of your application What happens to my personal information? As part of the transition of the Insulin Pump Program, relevant application, recipient and waitlist information is being securely transferred to Diabetes Australia. Diabetes Australia handles personal information in accordance with privacy laws and our Privacy Policy. Your information will only be used for administering the Insulin Pump Program and related program activities. I have been asked to provide more information. What should I do? If we have contacted you to request additional information or supporting documents, please provide the requested information as soon as possible. Can I withdraw my application? Yes. You can withdraw your application at any time by contacting Diabetes Australia. Current and previous program recipients Can I apply for the replacement pump? Recipients may be eligible to apply for a replacement pump if they continue to meet the program criteria. This may include situations where: The manufacturer’s warranty on the existing pump has expired. Recipients who received their insulin pumps under the Program between their 17th and 18th birthday (inclusive) can lodge an application for a new pump prior to the expiry of their pump warranty. These recipients can apply for a new pump between three (3) months prior to their 21st birthday and one (1) day prior to their 21st birthday. Subject to meeting the eligibility criteria and the availability of funds, these applications will be assessed alongside all other applications received by the Program. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application once the assessment process has been completed.
