All Australians have certain rights and responsibilities. But did you know that as a person living with diabetes, you have extra rights and responsibilities?

First and foremost, you are entitled to a comprehensive range of medical treatment and services, in addition to information and support. You also have the right to secondary services that may be useful (such as an interpreter) if required.

In the workforce, people with diabetes have the right to apply – and be fairly considered for – any job for which they are qualified. However, some restrictions may apply for high risk careers (eg the defence force). It’s important to know that discrimination based on a health condition or disability is illegal in Australia.

Your responsibilities include proactively managing your diabetes, registering with the NDSS, and carrying identification with you at all times, amongst other things.
