The Therapeutic Good Administration has updated GLP-1 RA product warnings because of their potential to cause a rare but severe eye disorder. 

The glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RAs) class of medicines are used to primarily treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. 

Emerging evidence suggests that semaglutide may be associated with a small increase in risk, although the absolute risk remains low.  

Seek urgent medical attention if you experience sudden loss of vision. 

The eye disorder, non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy, is a rare condition that may result in permanent visual impairment, including blindness, and no treatment has been shown to improve visual acuity outcomes.

The GLP-1 RA class of medicines currently marketed in Australia are:

• Trulicity – (dulaglutide)
• Ozempic – (semaglutide)
• Wegovy – (semaglutide)
• Mounjaro – (tirzepatide)*
• Saxenda – (liraglutide)

* Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/GLP-1 RA.
