In NSW and the ACT we work to improve the day-to-day lives of people living with diabetes. We aim to make things easier by providing access to education, information, programs and services designed to help people better manage their diabetes.

We provide trusted information, advice and support through:

Our prevention and awareness activities contribute to reducing the development of diabetes and the complications for those living with it.

Supporting the diabetes community in NSW and ACT

Diabetes Australia in NSW & ACT delivers advocacy support, psychological care and up to date expert advice to people living with diabetes. A range of national programs have been trialled and launched in NSW & ACT. These include:

• Diabuddies program for children and teens with type 1 diabetes and their families
• The Diabetes Counselling Service
• Beat It, an exercise program to help participants get back into a healthy routine to better manage diabetes and other chronic lifestyle conditions

We work across all levels of government to represent the views of people living with diabetes in all types of public debates and discussions. We also advocate for individuals and offer diabetes education in workplaces to improve the understanding of diabetes in the broader community. Recently we funded a type 2 diabetes remission study called DiRECT-Aus, replicating a successful study in the UK. The purpose of the project is to demonstrate that an intensive, supported, weight loss program can lead to the remission of type 2 diabetes. We believe that if the same results are achieved in Australia as in the UK, then the treatment of type 2 diabetes and the longer term health of Australians will be transformed. The findings are expected to be published in 2023.

Rowan Clifford, Chief Executive Officer

Rowan is dedicated health professional and business leader with a background in personal injury, workers’ compensation, health and wellbeing, injury prevention, NDIS, and employment services. Rowan completed undergraduate and post graduate studies in psychology, before undertaking an MBA to help further support his leadership journey.

As a senior and strategically focused leader, Rowan’s experiences are diverse with a proven record of growth and diversification across the health and human services industries. Leading an organisation that empowers all stakeholders to achieve their commercial and social aspirations is what drives and challenges Rowan. This has seen Rowan in senior/executive leadership roles within national and international allied health and human services organisations, including ASX listed and private equity backed enterprises (such as Advanced Personnel Management Group and Konekt Group). Rowan has extensive experience working under state and federal contracts, servicing those with injury, illness, disability, socioeconomic barriers or other areas of need.

Additionally, Rowan is Chair of the Blue Mountains Food Cooperative board (Australia’s largest food cooperative), and sits on the board of Mountains Youth Services Team (providing services and social connections for young people).

To do this, Rowan believes it is important to always act with authenticity and conviction in everything you do as a leader.

The Diabetic Association of Australia (as the organisation was known then) was founded in 1938 by Sir Kempson Maddox.
